Map of Longfield Court, 1737

This is a map of the manor of Longfield in 1737 which you may find  interesting. A Court Lodge was so named because it was the principal house in a manor, where the local court (or halimote) used to be held every two weeks. The practice died out more than a century ago, except for antiquarian survivals. The map only covers manor of Longfield, which does not cover the whole of Longfield parish.

This brings us to a small mystery. The house itself is the "C" shaped building tinted red, nearest to the orchard. But you will recall from the plan you have seen already, that the ancient house was an "L" shape, with the corner filled in during the 19th century. So between 1737 and around 1900, half the house seems to have been demolished.

The original of the map is held by the Centre for Kentish Studies in Maidstone, Kent, who should be acknowledged in any reproduction.
